Proxy shopping goes wrong when the label matters more than the plumbing. All three types forward your traffic through a different IP address, but that address comes from three very different places, and its origin decides how the rest of the internet treats you. Understanding the sourcing is the quickest route to the right choice.
Three labels, three different sources
Datacenter proxies live in server racks. The addresses belong to hosting companies and cloud providers, they appear in public registries as commercial ranges, and a provider can bring thousands online in an afternoon. That supply chain explains both the low price and the fact that anyone can identify them in bulk with a simple lookup.
Residential proxies borrow addresses that a fixed line ISP handed to a home connection. The pool is assembled from real households, normally through software that participants install and agree to run, so quality depends on how honestly that consent was gathered and on how many people are sharing the same exit at any moment.

Why the receiving server treats them differently
Any site you visit can look up which organisation owns your IP address and what kind of network it belongs to. Hosting ranges are unmistakable. Nobody browses a retail site from a rack in a colocation facility, so traffic from those ranges gets extra scrutiny by default, no matter how careful your request headers are.
Residential addresses look ordinary because one household normally sits behind one address. That is an advantage until something goes wrong, because behaviour from that line sticks to that specific address and there is nobody else on it to dilute the signal.
Mobile is the outlier. Carriers do not have enough public addresses for every handset, so they run carrier grade NAT and put large numbers of real subscribers behind a shared pool of public IPs. Blocking one of those addresses means blocking commuters, shoppers and app users along with whatever prompted the block, so networks stay cautious.
Speed, stability and what you are paying for
Datacenter connections are the fastest and the most predictable, because they sit on wired backbone links with no radio in the path. If your job is fetching millions of public pages that do not care who you are, that raw throughput is hard to argue with.
Residential speed follows whatever line the exit sits on, and it can change when the household starts streaming or the device goes to sleep. Mobile speed follows the radio: 4G is typically in the 20 to 45 Mbps range and 5G typically delivers 50 Mbps or more, which is ample for browsing, API calls, ad checks and testing work.
Price follows scarcity rather than speed. Datacenter addresses are cheap because they are easy to create. Mobile addresses cost more because each one needs a physical modem, a SIM and a live carrier account behind it, and that hardware has to be housed, powered and maintained by somebody.
Matching the type to the job
Start from the question you are actually trying to answer rather than from the product page. If the target does not personalise or restrict its response, the cheapest connection that reaches it is the correct one. If the target changes what it shows based on who appears to be asking, you need an address that looks like a real consumer in the right place.

Mistakes that quietly cost money
The first is buying on volume alone. A huge pool is worthless if the addresses are recycled through hundreds of unrelated users an hour before you get them. Control over rotation and knowledge of who else touches the address matter more than the headline count.
The second is treating location as a checkbox. City level accuracy only helps if the provider can tell you where the hardware physically is and how the address is registered. The third is mixing types inside a single workflow without thinking, so half your requests arrive from a rack and half from a carrier, which looks stranger than either one on its own.
